What is the immune system?

The immune system is an intricate network of organs, cells and molecules that collaborate to defend our body against infections. Without this protection, we would be exposed to countless bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites capable of causing serious harm. A well-functioning immune system can distinguish our own tissues from foreign invaders. When it encounters a pathogen, it triggers an immune response to eliminate the threat. Conversely, an underactive or overactive immune system, or one weakened by chronic illness, can give rise to health complications. Maintaining robust immune health is therefore essential for overall well-being.

Parts of the immune system

It comprises the following components:

  • Skin, Acts as a physical barrier, preventing pathogens from entering the body.
  • Bone marrow, The site where all immune cells are produced.
  • Thymus, A gland in the upper chest where critical immune cells complete their maturation.
  • White blood cells, Also called leukocytes, these cells patrol the body for invading microbes such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. Subtypes like B-cells and T-cells mount targeted attacks against threats.
  • Antibodies, Protein molecules that bind to antigens (foreign proteins on pathogens) to neutralize them. After initial exposure, antibodies remain in circulation to protect against future encounters with the same antigen.
  • Lymphatic system, A network of vessels that transports immune cells between tissues and the bloodstream.
  • Lymph nodes, Small, bean-shaped structures in the groin, neck, armpits and other areas; they filter lymph fluid, detect pathogens and dispatch appropriate white blood cells.
  • Spleen, Filters blood, removes microbes and recycles aged red blood cells. It also produces antibodies and other immune components.
  • Tonsils and adenoids, Located in the throat and nasal passages, they trap incoming pathogens and house immune cells that guard against respiratory and throat infections.
  • Mucous membranes, Line the respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive tracts. They secrete mucus that either traps germs or contains antibodies to destroy microbes.
  • Stomach and bowel, Stomach acid eradicates many ingested bacteria, while beneficial gut bacteria in the intestines outcompete harmful microbes. Clusters of lymphoid tissue in the small intestine, called Peyer’s patches, monitor and respond to potential pathogens.

How does the immune system work?

When a harmful pathogen breaches our defenses, the body mounts an immune response. White blood cells identify and engulf the intruder, antibodies are released to neutralize it, and additional reactions such as fever and inflammation may occur. A higher body temperature (fever) helps inhibit microbial growth and accelerates tissue repair. During inflammation, damaged cells release chemicals like histamine, causing blood vessels to leak fluid into surrounding tissues, this swelling helps isolate pathogens and prevents further spread.

What is immunity?

There are three forms of immunity:

Innate immunity

Inborn defenses that act immediately:

  • Skin
  • Stomach acid
  • Mucus
  • The cough reflex
  • Enzymes in tears and skin

Acquired immunity

Developed after first exposure to an antigen. The body records a “memory” of how to fight it, enabling a faster response upon re-exposure. Acquired immunity arises from:

  • Vaccination
  • Infection with the disease itself

Passive immunity

Temporary protection obtained through antibodies produced by another organism. For example, newborns inherit maternal antibodies via the placenta.

What are the signs of a weak immune system?

A weakened immune system leads to more frequent or severe infections. Indicators include:

  • Recurrent colds, pneumonia or bronchitis
  • Digestive disturbances such as diarrhea, constipation or bloating
  • Cuts and wounds that heal slowly
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Skin infections
  • Stunted growth or delayed development
  • Onset of autoimmune disorders

What causes a weak immune system?

Several factors can impair immune defenses:

  • Smoking
  • Excessive alcohol intake
  • Poor nutrition
  • Chronic stress
  • Obesity
  • Aging
  • Medical conditions such as HIV, diabetes, cancer or recent serious infections
  • Medications like steroids or chemotherapy

What about immune system disorders?

Sometimes the immune system malfunctions, resulting in four main categories of disorders: 1. Primary immune deficiency, Congenital conditions causing inherently weak immunity. 2. Autoimmune diseases, When the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues. Examples include:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Lupus
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Psoriasis
  • Graves’ disease
  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

3. Acquired immune deficiency, Loss of immune function due to infections (e.g. HIV/AIDS), severe illnesses (e.g. flu, mononucleosis, measles) or treatments (e.g. chemotherapy, organ-transplant anti-rejection drugs). 4. Overactive immune system, Excessive reactions causing allergies and hypersensitivities such as asthma, eczema and hay fever.

How does immunisation work?

Vaccination (or immunisation) sets the immune system’s memory in motion. Introducing small doses of antigen, such as inactivated or weakened viruses, or mRNA, prompts the body to produce antibodies. If later exposed to the actual pathogen, the immune system can respond quickly, often reducing the risk of serious illness. While vaccines may not always prevent infection entirely, they typically lessen its severity and duration.

When to see a doctor

Consult your physician if you experience frequent illnesses or lingering symptoms such as:

  • Persistent tiredness
  • Unexplained muscle aches or fevers
  • Hair loss
  • Rashes, inflammation or numbness in extremities
  • Recurrent infections

How to boost your immune system

You can support your immune health with these lifestyle habits:

  • Don’t smoke
  • Follow a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Take a multivitamin if dietary intake is inadequate
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Ensure sufficient sleep
  • Engage in regular physical activity
  • Manage stress effectively
  • Practice good hand hygiene
  • Stay current with vaccinations, including the annual flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine
