Understanding Your Eyes
The human eye is a complex organ composed of various components that function together to allow us to see. These parts include:
- Iris, the colored part of your eye
- Cornea, the transparent outer layer at the front of your eye
- Pupil, the dark circular opening in the center of your iris
- Sclera, the white area surrounding the colored iris
- Conjunctiva, a thin membrane covering the front of the eye except for the cornea
- Lens, located behind the pupil
- Retina, at the back of the eye, containing rods (for detecting movement and shapes) and cones (for perceiving colors and details)
- Optic nerve, located at the rear of the eye, linking to the brain.
How Eyes Function
When light enters the eye, it passes through the cornea, pupil, and lens. The cornea and lens work together to direct the light onto the retina, which then transforms the light into electrical signals. These signals are sent via the optic nerve to the brain, where they are interpreted and turned into visual images.

- Eat a well-balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals
- Include foods high in lutein and zeaxanthin in your diet, such as orange bell peppers, cooked corn, eggs, spinach, and kale
- Take precautions to avoid eye injuries
- Refrain from smoking
- Keep your hands clean and avoid touching your eyes to reduce the risk of infection
When to Consult an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist
Although regular checkups are essential, you should also seek advice from an optometrist or ophthalmologist if you notice any changes in your vision. Certain conditions require immediate attention as they may lead to vision loss. These include:
- Eye injuries, such as penetrating wounds, blunt trauma, chemical exposure, or foreign objects in the eye
- Flashes and floaters (specks or shapes appearing in your vision)
- Sudden changes or loss of vision
- Eye pain
